A new year, a new week, a new day…

A new year, a new week, a new day…

Why is New Years so important?  What is it about a new year that makes us “Hit the reset button” or the “Start now button”?  What is it about “New” that makes it so special?

Every day we have tomorrow as a new day, and every Sunday we have Monday as the new week.  Tomorrow we have a new year starting.  What is it that makes us always look forward to the new when we are living the now?  Living for today instead of living for tomorrow?  It is probably better than living for yesterday or last month, or last year, but living for tomorrow seems strangely wrong to me.

For me tomorrow only means I have to remember to change the last digit when I document the date.  Its 2012 instead of 2011 and thankfully I don’t write too many checks anymore so its not nearly as embarrassing to forget what year it actually is. Tomorrow is just another day, but it still seems special.  Do I eat this crap food today because I can work it off “Next Year”.  Like the silliness of farting I still laugh when someone says “See you next year”.  Yes I have the maturity of a 5 year old.

Is next year supposed to be better than last year, or is it just a hope of ours?  2011 was the best year I never want to experience again.  Why do I hope 2012 is better?  Do our minds dwell on the mistakes of our past year only on the last day?  Is it about fantasy?  Do we dream of the possibilities 365 brand new days might allow us to experience?

2011 brought the reality of life when it was almost taken away.  It brought accomplishments that were unique unto their own.  It brought memories that only can be experienced once.  2011 was a great year, but why are we so excited when we have one more day to experience?

I will end with this, tomorrow is a new day, a new week, and a new year.  When you wake up tomorrow don’t count the minutes you have until the next tomorrow, but live the minutes you have been given today to the fullest.
