Confession of a Barefoot Runner- Saucony – Kinvara 2
Barefoot Runner: “its been 16 months since I wore running shoes with a heal drop… Sorry Father I might have sinned this past weekend”
Barefoot Confessional: “go ahead my natural son, tell me what is on your soul”
BR: “This weekend at a Dirty Herd running classic I did the unthinkable, I just can’t tell you”
BC: “It couldn’t be that bad, go ahead”
BR: “I gave into peer pressure and I tested a product from Saucony that had a 4mm heel to toe drop, its been so long since I have put any type of heel drop under my foot, but I had to try it”
BC: “Did you enjoy the feel of the heal drop?”
BR: “I didn’t feel anything, I ran on a snow packed trail, and the lugs on the bottom of the shoe made it hard to feel the ground. I haven’t been that high of the ground in a long time. It even made my ankles hurt from the hard packed snow roots. I don’t think anything was the shoes fault, but its been so long since I ran in those shoes”
BC: “If you didn’t feel anything, why did you keep running in them?”
BR: “I wanted to give them a chance. I thought after 6.8 miles I might grow to not like them, but they did work well on snow. It surprised me how much traction I got, but I missed the feel of the ground. That is what bothered me. That and the weight of the shoe. My goodness, compared to the RunAmoc Dash they felt like bricks. It wasn’t the shoes fault, but my own for not training in them before. I really think they just might have a place in trail running, or loose, rocky, snowy, or sandy soil.”
BC: “What do you plan to do with this knowledge, by barefoot son?”
BR: “I don’t know father, what should I do with the experience of running in the Saucony – Kinvara 2 shoes?”
BC: “Well its an experience that you should learn from, even though the shoes are not the best shoe for your feet, the knowledge and experience can be shared with others who are looking for an alternative to pure minimalist zero drop shoes”
BR: “Thank you father, I will run 100 miles in zero drop shoes to make up for my sin”
What punishment do you think the barefoot runner should get for trying non zero drop shoes?
